BIOGRAPHY

"I want to create art that holds a sense of drama and takes on an almost religious quality. I have been exposed to a lot of ecclesiastical imagery both as a child and through travel. Feasting on the works of masters such as Titian and Caravaggio along with the sublime work of Turner and apocalyptic landscapes of John Martin, has definitely informed the visual language of my landscapes & figurative paintings. Since graduating in 1997 I have lived and worked in Brighton, UK. exhibiting regularly in various galleries nationally."

"Patrick O’Donnell’s radiant and powerful abstract paintings won him the Neo Hotel Art Prize at last year’s Brighton Art Fair. His oil paintings depict the power and grandeur of the forces of nature, swirling mists, and Krakatoan vistas."

"Patrick O'Donnell's oil paintings consist of intense, gorgeous colours that merge into one another. In these maps of luminous colour, jagged lines meet one another in evocations of dramatic beauty..."
Hattie Gordon, Author

"Patrick O’Donnell’s paintings are brooding landscapes of vivid colour and bold composition. With a nod to the apocalyptic visions of John Martin, Joseph Wright and JMW Turner, they are highly dramatic, with an almost religious intensity. O’Donnell may find inspiration in the solidity of the real world - printed images, personal photos - but his painting is a far more intuitive process. The composition and colour evolves through the application of layer after layer of paint. Perhaps it is this process that gives the paintings their richness - a depth that magnetises and seduces the viewer."
